Our literary journey inspired by the first Gothic novel in history, The Castle of Otranto by Horace Walpole, from 1764.
We will wander the halls of the Aragonese Castle and its terraces, explore the underground passages, and recount the stories told in the novel. We will also describe the structure in its current form.
An evocative journey through love and betrayal, prophecies, crimes, and mysterious apparitions.

Origin and Style of the Novel

Genre: The work gave its name to the "Gothic" genre (subtitled "A Gothic Story" in the second edition), combining elements of medieval chivalric romance with the realism of the modern novel.

Inspiration: Walpole claimed to have written the story after a nightmare he had at his villa, Strawberry Hill House, where he dreamed of a "giant hand in armor."

Setting: The story takes place in a dark and imaginary medieval Italy, inside Prince Manfred's castle.

Brief Synopsis of the Novel
The story begins with a supernatural event: young Corrado, son of the tyrant Manfred, is crushed by a colossal helmet fallen from the sky on the very day of his wedding to Princess Isabella. Manfred, fearing a prophecy that would spell the end of his lineage, attempts to divorce his wife Hippolyta to marry Isabella herself. A daring escape ensues through secret and underground passages, with ghostly apparitions, animated paintings, and the involvement of the young peasant Theodore.

The novel profoundly influenced later authors such as Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, and Edgar Allan Poe.
