Cava di Bauxite
A small lake of an extraordinary emerald green color immersed in a Siena red earth, it is an absolutely not to be missed place.
Just outside Otranto, on the coastal road leading to Badisco, Santa Cesarea Terme, and Castro, near the Palascìa Lighthouse and the Torre del Serpe, lies a fascinating red earth deposit, known as the "Bauxite Quarry."
This is an old, now-disused mining site: the soil, rich in bauxite and other minerals, combined with seeping groundwater, has transformed into an emerald-green lake surrounded by Siena-red earth, creating one of the most colorful landscapes in the region.
