Summer Solstice

Every June 21st, with the arrival of the summer solstice, the Cathedral of Otranto celebrates a truly unique event: the enchanting phenomenon of the alignment of the sun's rays on the majestic Tree of Life depicted in its extraordinary mosaic.

This evocative event has been repeated continuously since 1165, the year in which the priest Pantaleone completed the last tile of a mosaic floor spanning approximately 600 square meters, a work of inestimable historical and artistic value.

Thus, on the longest day of the year, the mosaic and the basilica together celebrate the fusion of nature and art, beauty and the promise of eternity, light and stone, heaven and earth. An opportunity to narrate, through an ideal journey of Christian initiation, the universal story of salvation. Culture, art, and faith dialogue in a morning dedicated to the rediscovery of the Christological meaning of time and light.
