Festa SS. Martiri di Otranto

13-15 Agosto 2026 - Otranto

Festa SS. Martiri di Otranto

The Tredicina opens on July 31st in the Cathedral with the solemn exposition of the Martyrs' urn. Since they are the patron saints of the city and the Archdiocese of Otranto, the Tredicina is revived and celebrated by the entire diocese through the Vicariates (pastoral areas). Each Vicariate is present and hosts an evening of the Tredicina, which ends on August 12th.

August 13th is entirely dedicated to the civil commemoration of the Otranto massacre.

In the early evening, the town's mayor, the Archbishop, and civil, military, and religious authorities depart from the town hall and proceed to the "Monument" in Piazza degli Eroi. A wreath is laid, and a commemorative speech is delivered. Late in the evening, a diocesan vigil for young people is held on the hill of the martyrdom, to renew the enduring message of hope and civic commitment of the 19th century.

On August 14th, at 11:00 a.m., a solemn pontifical mass will be held in the Cathedral, presided over by the Archbishop, with the presence of authorities, the diocesan presbytery, and a large number of the diocesan laity. In the afternoon, a procession will take place with the urn containing the relics of the Most Blessed Martyrs, carried through the city streets by the priests of the Otranto diocese. Illuminations fill the town's main streets, creating a captivating atmosphere, and numerous stalls are set up to welcome locals and tourists. The band plays classics and delights visitors with its sweet music.

In the evening, the center of Otranto comes alive with people. Some buy souvenirs from street vendors, others savor "cupeta" and "mustazzoli," typical Salento sweets, and others fill their stomachs with sausage sandwiches. And then, after midnight, everyone turns their gaze toward the sea in anticipation of the breathtaking fireworks display. Fireworks of every color and shape illuminate the starry sky, reflecting on the Adriatic Sea. As a people's Church, we find ourselves on the path accompanied by the Martyrs, a people who have borne witness to their faith in Jesus Christ with their blood.
