OTRANTO - 3° STEP
Otranto, Italy's easternmost city, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and historically interesting in Salento. Of ancient origins, it owes its name to a stream: the Idro. The monuments of greatest historical and artistic interest along the itinerary include: the cathedral with its mosaic, the Castle, the Church of San Pietro, and Porta Alfonsina.
Starting from Santa Cesarea along the Adriatic coast, we advance towards Torre Specchia di Guardia and Torre Minervino, two historic towers with breathtaking panoramic views. Next, we arrive at Porto Badisco, a picturesque cove famous for its beach and archaeological importance. From here, we continue towards Otranto, a city rich in history and culture.
In Otranto, you can visit the majestic Giants' Cauldron of Torre Sant'Emiliano and the medieval tower of Torre Sant'Emiliano, evidence of the city's strategic importance. After Otranto, we continue towards Masseria Cippano, a typical agricultural estate, and the Abbey of San Nicola di Casole, an ancient monastery dating back to the 12th century.
The journey continues with an exploration of the evocative Otranto Bauxite Quarry and the Hypogeum of Torre Pinta, an underground necropolis from the Messapian period. The route continues to the Aragonese Castle, dominating the historic center of Otranto, and the Byzantine Basilica of St. Peter, with its frescoes and mosaics.
Next, you can visit the evocative Archbishop's Palace and the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Annunziata, both artistic and religious treasures. To conclude the experience, a walk to the Torre Alfonsina offers a panoramic view of the city and the sea, followed by crossing the Porta Terra, the ancient entrance to the old town.
This itinerary allows you to discover the wonders of the Salento coast, immersing yourself in its history, culture, and natural beauty. Also noteworthy is the significant presence of sea caves along the coast, which offer spectacular underground landscapes with rock formations and crystal-clear waters, adding to the route's charm and mystery.
