MAGLIE - 4° STEP
Known as the “economic capital” of Basso Salento, Maglie boasts a historic center of notable artistic and architectural value, with the 18th-century Palazzo Baroniale Capece and typical Lecce Baroque features such as the column of the Madonna delle Grazie and the church of the same name with a bell tower reminiscent of that of Lecce Cathedral.
Starting from Otranto, a fascinating city steeped in history, we head towards the Ipogea dell'Idro, ancient underground cisterns used for rainwater collection. From here, we move to the Crypt Church of Monte Sant'Angelo, a frescoed crypt that transports us back in time with its beauty and spirituality.
Next, we head towards Giurdignano, a charming town rich in archaeological finds. Here, we admire the Madonna del Rosario menhir, an imposing monolith that bears witness to the past. We continue towards the Byzantine Crypt of San Salvatore, a mysterious and fascinating place that reveals the art and spirituality of the Byzantine era.
We continue our journey among the menhirs of San Vincenzo, San Paolo, and Croce della Fausa, ancient monoliths that inspire us to reflect on the importance and significance of prehistoric monuments. We then pass through Palmariggi, where we find the Sanctuary of Maria SS. Montevergine, a sacred place of worship that invites us to pause for reflection and contemplation. Not far away, we discover the Votive Shrine of the Ancient Way, a sacred shrine that testifies to the devotion along the ancient route.
We continue towards the evocative Aragonese Castle of Palmariggi, a medieval fortress that offers panoramic views of the surrounding area, offering a striking glimpse into the past. We cannot miss the Montevergine Menhirs, ancient monoliths that awaken our curiosity and connect us to the roots of history.
Finally, we reach the Spruno Menhir, an imposing testimony to prehistory that leaves us speechless. We conclude our journey by reaching Maglie, a picturesque town that welcomes us with its authenticity and possibilities for discovery.
